A homegrown movement to protect the clear waters and wild rivers of Oregon's Kalmiopsis - Wild Rivers Coast

Rough and Ready and Baldface Creeks among America’s most endangered rivers

You can help by going to American River’s Rough and Ready and Baldface Creek page. Then click on take action to send a message to the Secretaries of Agriculture and Interior asking them to act on Senator Wyden, Senator Merkley and Rep. DeFazio’s repeated requests to withdraw Rough and Ready and Baldface Creek from mining and the location of new claims under the archaic Mining Law.

Proposed nickel strip mines, exploratory drilling and the Obama Administration’s failure to withdraw the Rough and Ready Creek and Baldface Creek watersheds from the 1872 Mining Law earned these wild pristine creeks a place on the Most Endangered Rivers in America list.  American Rivers made the announcement on April 17th, but there’s still time to make your voice heard.

Senator Wyden and Senator Merkley’s press release calling on the Obama Administration to withdraw Rough and Ready and Baldface Creek watersheds for a fourth time includes the 2011 letter the Senators and Representative DeFazio sent to the Obama Administration. For even more background, see their 2010 press release and letter to the Secretaries of Interior and Agriculture.

If you live in Oregon, please snd a simple thank you note to Senator Ron Wyden and Senator Jeff Merkley and to Representative DeFazio. Suggested text:

Thank you for standing up for Rough and Ready Creek and Baldface Creek. We urge you to act quickly to provide both the interim (administrative mineral withdrawal) and permanent (legislation) protection these priceless Oregon treasures need.
